Fix camera and microphone problems in video chat

Check sound in the right direction, device permissions and your connection. Follow these steps on a computer, iPhone or Android phone.

Identify which part is not working

Seeing your own video does not confirm that your microphone is sending sound. Yovo does not play your own voice back to you, to avoid feedback. After a fix, ask your match whether they can hear you; you can use messages for this.

I can hear my match, but they cannot hear me

  1. Check the microphone icon in your video window. If it is muted, select Unmute microphone. Also check any physical mute switch on your headset.
  2. If Yovo says your microphone was interrupted or disconnected, reconnect the device and select Restore microphone. This requests microphone access again and attempts to keep the current conversation.
  3. Check your browser and device permissions. Camera permission does not also grant microphone permission.
  4. If you use a Bluetooth headset, check which microphone is active. To compare, disconnect the headset and try the built-in microphone after stopping and restarting the chat.
  5. If recovery does not help, select Stop, close other apps using the microphone and start chatting again. Restart your browser if needed.

If the problem happens with only one person, ask them to check their volume and playback. Sound working in one direction does not establish which side has the problem.

I can see my match, but I cannot hear them

Select Enable video and sound if it appears over the video. This starts playback when your browser has not allowed it automatically.

Turn up your device’s media volume and make sure the browser tab is not muted. Check whether sound is going to Bluetooth headphones or another connected audio output. Ask your match to unmute their microphone. Unmuting your own microphone does not, by itself, fix incoming sound.

My camera will not start or shows a black screen

Open https://yovo.chat in a regular browser. If you followed a link inside a messaging or social app, open it in Safari, Chrome or Firefox. Check that the camera is connected, its privacy shutter is open and the camera icon in Yovo is not turned off.

Select Stop, close other apps and tabs using the camera, then choose Check camera. Allow both camera and microphone access: Yovo needs both devices to start. If your own picture still does not appear, test the camera in another app and close that app before returning to the chat.

If your own picture works but your match’s video is missing, ask them to check their camera. If the screen stays on Connecting or shows a connection error, follow the connection checks.

Allow camera and microphone access

Permission may be needed in two places: for yovo.chat in your browser, and for the browser in your device settings. Menu names vary by system version and language.

Chrome on a computer

Open Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings. Allow yovo.chat in the Camera and Microphone sections. Check the selected microphone there if you have more than one. See Google Chrome’s permission guide.

Chrome on Android

In Chrome, open Settings → Site settings → Camera or Microphone. Allow yovo.chat if it is blocked. In Android settings, also check Apps → Chrome → Permissions for camera and microphone access. See Google’s guides for Chrome websites and Android app permissions.

Safari on iPhone

Open yovo.chat in Safari and find its website settings in the page menu by the address bar. Set camera and microphone access to Allow or Ask. General Safari settings are under Settings → Apps → Safari. See Apple’s guide to Safari permissions.

Mac: Safari and system permissions

In Safari, open Settings → Websites and check camera and microphone access for yovo.chat. Your browser may also need permission under System Settings → Privacy & Security. Apple explains website settings, microphone access and camera access.

Return to Yovo after changing permissions. If you need to reload the page or restart the browser, select Stop first. Starting again begins a new search; it does not preserve your previous match.

If the connection still fails

Select Stop and start again. If the error repeats, check your internet connection and try another network, such as mobile data instead of Wi-Fi. Work, school and some public networks may restrict video connections. Changing networks during a conversation may interrupt it.

Looking for someone means Yovo is waiting for an available participant; it does not, by itself, mean your camera has failed. If an error persists, email support@yovo.chat with your device, browser, approximate time and exact error text. Do not send passwords or a recording of the conversation.
